September 01, 2001, London. Consumer demand for internet remains sky
high despite the string of high profile dot.com failures. In an independent
study conducted for London-based, technology company Netvoyager more than
90% of 18-30 year old men who didn't have internet access to their home
said they still wanted it.
Demand was also strong across a wide age range witb 80% of 35+ mothers
wanting domestic internet access and 75% of the over 50s wanting to browse
from the comfort of the own home.
Unsurprisingly, the survey found that penetration of internet usage was
strongest amongst 18 to 30 year old men, with more than 44% having internet
access these figures dropped sharply to 18% among women with children
and then further to just 8% of over 50s having internet access.
For those without internet access, the two most frequently raised barriers
to going online in all age groups were 'cost' and 'no PC'. Only in the
18-30s was the issue of having 'no time' to surf raised.
Those who did use the internet were asked to estimate how much time they
spent on line per month at home and at work. The figures indicated that
use was strongest among the 18 to 30s: an average of 11.7hrs at work,
37.7hrs at home. Among women 35+ with children use was 4.8 hours at work
and 10.4 at home; among the over 50s average time spent was 6.9hrs at
work and at home.
Those that were surfing had differing interests according to the demographic
men 18 to 30 using internet banking the most, 35+ women with children
using the net for education and the over 50s focusing on travel.
Methodology
Netvoyager commissioned an independent study into consumer internet usage
and demand, in May and June 2001. A questionnaire was mailed to 15,000 people
in the UK from three distinct demographic groups: men aged 18 to 30; women
over the age of 35, with children; and men and women over the age of 50.
