Chosen resolution not being applied

Postby idealwebsites on Wed Mar 24, 2010 3:35 pm

I've just upgraded some old LX1010s to Phoenix and I'm now trying to get them into the right resolution.

The monitors' native resolution is 1360*768 which appears in the list of support resolutions in the configuration panel but won't seem to apply. I select it from the list and click test, the screen flickers and I get the success message. I then return to the display configuration screen and click save but every time it comes back as 1280*1024. I can even restart the device, go back to the display configuration, and it will say 1360*768 but the monitor confirms that it's actually being given a picture in 1280*1024.

Any ideas? Is 1360*768 even supported on these thin clients?

Strange indeed.
Let's try this to check if the test was correct on not: if you try a test with a selected resolution of 1280*1024, is the white box with the ok message strictly identical to the one displayed when you perform a test with 1360*768 ? Also when that message box appears, if you drag the mouse around the screen edges, does it follow them, or is there a cropped area or is there maybe an area you can't reach with the mouse?

Maybe the test is not as successful as it appears at first sight. If not, then one possibility is that the card cannot display that resolution (I am not sure that resolution existed way back when the lx1010 was released). One other possibility is that you use a fixed refresh rate and the flat panel can't handle it at that resolution (60 Hz doesn't work with most flat panels), in which case you'll have to try using DDC. Or maybe try it the other way round, disabling DDC and setting the refresh rate to 60Hz.

In any case if you ended up with a blank screen, don't forget that you can always reset the display to 640x480 by pressing F2 during boot up, entering the rescue manager and choosing the option: "reset display" or some similar name I don't remember the exact wording.

Please give me some feedback on your progress.

Ok, first of all I think I was mistaken about the success message. It actually just says "Testing display, timeout after 10 seconds" with an OK button.

This is all I see, no success messages, whether I try it in the resolution I want or just in 1280*1024. I've also tried it with DDC enabled and disabled and with a few different refresh rates. I believe it should be 60Hz anyway as my monitor constantly pops up a message saying 'Recommended mode 1360*768 60Hz'.

When I try setting the resolution to 800*600 I get the 'Testing display' message in a larger format but when I tried doing what you said and comparing the white box in 1280 and 1360 it is exactly the same size.

Before I upgraded the thin client (i.e It was running lithium) I was able to get it into a widescreen resolution but now none of the widescreen ones seem to work.

"Testing display, timeout after 10 seconds" with an OK button.
is also what I called the success message. So we were on the same page here. It is usually a good indication whether the monitor can do the job or not. In your case it seems like it fails miserably to display your resolution. The chip does display this resolution, and you confirmed that it is capable of it because lithium used to do it.

The drivers used in phoenix don't use an horizontal or vertical refresh rate that your monitor can handle, and falls back to 1280x1024. I don't think I can solve your problem on that one easily, I tested it here on a monitor doing 1900x1200 and setting your wide screen resolution, and it worked, so I can't test more than this I am afraid. Could you send a copy of the error logs to our support email address? (to do that use the web management interface go to tools, and click on export logs)

Ok, thanks, I will do that.

In the mean time, is there anywhere I can get a copy of the Lithium image?

That software has not been supported for a very long time I am afraid. this is a very slim chance that I can get my hands on an unit that still have it to clone it and send in you image. I won't make any promises, but I'll try.

Ok, getting complaints about blurry and distorted screens now so I'll have to sort it out.

I still have a couple of these that I haven't upgraded. Is there a way I can clone off of those?

Ok I checked, and no I don't have any old lx1010 with the old OS at hand.
The one possibility to clone your old lithium OSes is quite complex if you are not a seasoned unix user. I would not recommend it you weren't.
This step can damage your old LX1010 if you don't know what you are doing, or if not done properly!!!!
One of your possibilities would be to boot from the rescue image on an old Lithium lx1010, to not launch the rescue step but instead:
- mount an other pen drive on the system, large enough to fit 128 MB of data.
- open a terminal, copy the data from the lx1010 (as the root user): where _mountpoint_ is the path to your mounted directory
Code: Select all
dd if=/dev/hdc of=_mountpoint_/lithiumDump ; sync

This should create a 128MB file with the OS on it.
Then boot the lx1010 you want to downgrade with the rescue disk, mount the second pen drive, and copy the file back:
Code: Select all
dd if=_mountpoint_/lithiumDump of=/dev/hdc ; sync

reboot, the old os may work I haven't tested it myself, but in theory it should work. Be aware that this procedure voids any guarantee, as you are tempering with the OS. In any case you can always use the rescue disk to reinstall Phoenix.

PS: would you be, by any chance, the person who sent us an e-mail to support@ at 12:23PM yesterday?
