Session terminates after login Ubuntu 8.10

Postby vethunt on Tue Jul 07, 2009 8:29 am

I have a number of LX1000 successfully connecting via Xwin to Ubuntu 8.10. Currently have LX1022 on trial I see GDM login screen, but session terminates after login. Any ideas?

Dear Vethunt,

We test our machines internally on Ubuntu 8.10, with GDM, so we are confident they work fine connecting through XDMCP.
Now do you Connect using direct, indirect or broadcast? I ask that question because of the following:
When connecting to indirect (and depending on server settings also in broadcast mode), you first get a list of servers. After picking one, the connection ends, and another starts. If the option exit after disconnection has been ticked, the session ends, and the session manager comes back, as you described. That is the way the indirect protocol works. Therefore if you are connecting through indirect mode, you will need to choose the option restart after disconnection.

The problem with that is how to stop the session? Well if you press ctrl + alt + end you will get back to the session manager (or minimize all the windows in desktop mode). From there you can still close the session using the session manager.

Let us know if that solves your problem, if not try to give us as many details as possible on the server and the connection parameters.

Regards,
Ben

Xwindow mode =query
Exit after Terminate = NO
Enable Backing store = either yes or no

Action on exit = Nothing -- If set to restart session goes to netvoyager splash screen

Similar setting all work Fine on LX1000

SERVER:

XDMCP Login window Preferences

Honour indirect requests (ticked)
UDP Port 177
Max Pending Requests =4
MAx Pending Indirect Requests =4
Max Remote Sessions = 16
MAx Wait Time 15
Max indirect Wait time 15
Displays per host 2
Ping interval 15

Hope this helps

I am a bit embarrassed here, because your settings don't have anything even remotely suspicious about them.
However I remember people having problem with GDM on ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04. In the XDMCP Login window Preferences, if you change the style of remote connections from same as local to plain with face browser, and also tick the option "do not show image for remote login", that could solve your problems.

I am fishing a bit in the dark here, but it's worth a try. I was not able to replicate your problem in any way, and since you are connecting in direct mode, Exit after Terminate should not have any incidence, so we can drop that lead.

Keep us informed of any progress or lack of, and we will get it sorted.

Hi Ben,

The login window is plain with face browser. Image is visible.

I can see and use the login window perfectly as on LX1000, but once user selected and password entered the session ends and I return to session manager - rather than the gnome desktop appearing.

Hi David,
Sorry the last trick didn't work.
Can you tell me if you use the same resolution and refresh rate on your lx1000 and on the lx1022, using the same user account?
Gnome saves the resolution settings and sometimes changes the X server settings to whatever has been set using its graphical tool, even if that setting doesn't suit the current display.

Perhaps you can try something like connecting with user X with the lx1000, set the resolution to 640x480 and refresh rate to 60Hz on the lx1000 and on the server using the gnome graphical tool, and then set the lx1022 to the same resolution and refresh rate, and finally connect using user X to that server. If that test doesn't work then we'll have eliminated another possible culprit.

By the way do you use the same monitor with the 2 units?

Ben.

HI Kirsti,
Well that is a tricky question, it really depends on whether you are experiencing the same problem or not, the same symptoms can have different sources. There I was trying to see if David had set up the sessions in a mode that wasn't suitable for the monitors he had connected to the lx1022. On Ubuntu Gnome uses xrandr to set up resolution and refresh rate, and Gnome only kicks in after the user logs in, and if the last recorded value didn't work with the new monitor or local graphics set up in our case, I had a hunch that it could go blank and lose the connection. I am not saying this is the reason it doesn't work in your case, nor that it was the reason it didn't work for him.

In any case be sure you are connecting in Direct mode (query) or if you are doing so in indirect mode, choose "No" in exit after session terminates. The XDMCP is done so that there is a connection made to a first server which has a list of xdmcp server, and when you choose a server in the list, the first connection ends, and an other is made with the server you chose. if you tick "exit after connection ends", what happens is that after the first one finishes, the session terminates as well, simple but deadly to your session. The first thing you should try is to check if it works in query (direct) mode, to avoid any misunderstanding.

Please give us any advances on your progress,
Ben
